When a tooth is not able to be restored, the tooth must be removed.
- A local anesthetic will be administered to make you comfortable during the procedure. Many times we can wiggle the tooth back and forth and it will come out in one piece.
- Sometimes, if a tooth is severely broken down, or if the tooth has roots with large curves, the tooth must be taken out in a few different pieces. A dental handpiece is used to section the tooth into smaller pieces, then the pieces are removed one at a time until the entire tooth is gone.
- If you are planning to have an implant placed, once the tooth is removed, we will place a bone graft into the socket. We will then place sutures over the top of the graft material to keep it in place while the jaw heals.
